Radius Fracture


Answer


1) The radiological x ray shows fracture of the distal end of radius bone in which fracture line enter the joint and displacement of distal fragment proximally.


2) Barton's fracture of Right radius.


3) Both Smith and Barton describes about fracture of the lower end of Radius. However in Smith fracture, the fracture line did not enter the joint and the anterior lip of radius did not displace proximally.


4) Treatment

- Basic treatment of any fracture is the same which is Reduction, hold and exercise + pain management. specific management for both Smith/Burton fracture is forearm cast with hand in supine position and wrist in full extension.

- Failure of CMR will require open reduction internal fixation with plate attachs to the volar aspect of radius


5) Complication

- Malunion

- Flexion deformity

- Probably will require joint arthrodesis later
